Marquette County is a small, rural county surrounded by larger counties with more resources.

How does the Sheriff’s department attract and retain deputies when many other counties can pay more?

I believe this starts with clear expectations, accountability, and transparency. It is important to have a clear vision, mission, and office values for everyone to follow. A guide of sorts to allow new staff and long-term staff to follow. This guide will open up future possibilities for staff to better themselves, their peers, and our community. 

 

It is highly unlikely we will ever be able to compete with counties larger than us for wages. We as leaders also need to be mindful to think about our staff needs first and our other departments as well. Marquette County should be compared with counties of similar population, characteristics, and where we are geographically located in the state.

 

I can say that Marquette County can be proud of the quality equipment we have and training our Sheriff’s Office staff receive on an annual basis. This is a very important piece to recruit, hire, and retain quality staff.
